La réplique de Firmin Paris (pseudonyme de l’abbé Maxime Hudon) aux chroniques de langage « Corrigeons-nous! » de Louis Frechette parues dans La Presse (1899) ne doit pas être évaluée seulement du point de vue des commentaires faits sur la langue. On pourrait plutôt y voir une attaque personnelle qui traduirait un conflit d’ordre idéologique entre les libéraux et les conservateurs. La chronique de langue de Paris dans La Défense sert de prétexte à un débat de société: un conflit social s’exprimant à travers le débat sur la langue. Dans cet article, après avoir situé les textes de Paris dans la tradition des chroniques de langue, on examinera comment se présente sa réplique, de façon à faire voir l’importance de l’explication de ce genre d’écrits pour la compréhension de l’histoire des idées au Canada français. L’approche méthodologique pratiquée ici s’inspire des travaux de l’analyse de discours avec une prise en compte du contexte historique et social de l’époque.
