Abstract
Aujourd’hui, Ferdinand Tönnies, philosophe et sociologue allemand tombé dans l’oubli, suscite à nouveau notre intérêt. L’œuvre principale de Tönnies, Communauté et société, fut publiée en Allemagne en 1887. En 1944 la première traduction française du germaniste Joseph Leif fut disponible. Malgré sa réédition (Retz) en 1977 l’ouvrage est épuisé à l’heure actuelle. A la lumière de l’opposition entre la communauté et la société la réflexion actuelle sur le communautarisme trouvera une assise conceptuelle plus nette. De façon générale, pour Tönnies l’opposition de la communauté et de la société repose sur l’idée que le tissu social ne se résume pas à de simples rapports contractuels entre les individus. D’autres liens, notamment familiaux, préexistent et perdurent. Ils ont leur raison d’être et demandent à être pris en compte. Tönnies se fait ainsi théoricien de la rupture qui caractérise la société allemande à la fin du 19e siècle. Pour lui, la modernité économique et sociale est essentiellement caractérisée par l’avènement de l’individu autonome.
