L'article tente tout d'abord de faire le point sur la recherche en psychologie des émotions, en rappelant brièvement les théories classiques, particulièrement le débat James/Cannon ainsi que les différentes façons de définir les émotions, leurs fonctions et leurs composantes. Sont ensuite présentées les diverses théories mettant le primat sur la cognition, l'émotion, ou la réconciliation cognition/émotion. L'importance à accorder à l'analyse du langage non verbal dans l'interaction conversationnelle est soulignée, notamment dans le domaine de l'entretien thérapeutique qui constitue une forme privilégiée de partage social des émotions. Enfin, les bienfaits de l'approche éthologique sont rapidement esquissés. Lorsqu'il s'agit de former des candidats à la relation d'aide, cette approche - particulièrement à la phase de rétroaction - permet aisément d'avoir accès aux représentations liées aux affects ainsi qu'à la reviviscence des affects des deux partenaires de l'interaction.
