Dans ce texte qui s’appuie largement sur les mythes grecs et sur la pensée des héritiers de Nietzsche et de Freud qui ont tant parlé de la « face obscure » dans l’humain, l’auteur s’interroge sur les procédures par lesquelles l’éthique s’édifie, à un niveau fondamental, en métamorphosant la négativité en un « négatif constitutif ». Le texte établit d’emblée une distinction entre l’éthique première, universelle, qui s’ancre dans la profondeur de l’humain et les ethnoéthiques qui sont des constructions socio-historiques particulières. L’auteur montre que les systèmes éthiques se constituent, dans toutes les sociétés, en s’arrachant à la « face d’ombre » qui est au coeur de l’humain, et qu’ils conservent, pour cette raison, des traces de leur ancrage primordial. Le tragique envahit ainsi l’éthique d’une manière incontournable.
