Abstract
L'union libre est une forme de conjugalité ancienrie et répandue en Amérique latine. Elle constituerait même le trait le plus distinctif de la nuptialité de ce sous-continent. Cependant, sa persistance à travers les siècles et sa progression actuelle nous obligent à l'analyser de façon plus approfondie. Le but principal de ce travail est de présenter les caractéristiques de l'union libre « traditionnelle » en Amérique latine et plus particulièrement au Mexique, telles qu'elles apparaissent depuis 1950. Les études démographiques réalisées depuis vingt-cinq ans font ressortir les traits communs d'un phénomène qui varie dans l'espace et dans le temps : les couples qui sont entrés dans la vie conjugale par l'union libre se sont unis à un âge plus précoce et sont moins stables que les couples qui ont opté pour le mariage. De plus, ils sont moins scolarisés et occupent des emplois moins spécialisés.
