Abstract
Nous partons des travaux de François-Marc Gagnon sur les images des castors canadiens aux XVII e et XVIII e siècles, pour élaborer sur l’éthologie du castor et sa place dans l’univers symbolique autochtone. Nous traitons ensuite du castor dans la traite des pelleteries, puis de la perception coloniale du castor. Nous y analysons les mécanismes de transfert culturel d’un mythe autochtone du castor acteur primordial de la genèse, à celui, profane, d’un ordre social hiérarchique ou républicain fondé sur l’éthique du travail à la manière des castors. S’y greffe, la conviction de l’existence d’une société des castors analogue à celle des « Sauvages », toutes deux condamnées à disparaître devant l’avance du progrès et de la civilisation.
