Depuis longtemps, le désir de concevoir des méta-récits historiques destinés à séparer le passé du présent et à indiquer lestrajectoires probables dans l’avenir est au coeur de la tradition sociologique. En règle générale, le cours réel de l’histoire aplutôt démenti les prévisions. Aujourd’hui, les théories spéculatives de la modernisation et de la transformation du capitalisteque les spécialistes des sciences sociales avaient tant prisées entre les années cinquante et soixante-dix ont presque toutes étéinfirmées. En réaction, beaucoup ont renoncé à leurs ambitions théoriques antérieures pour embrasser, d’une part, le solipsismedu post-modernisme et, d’autre part, les modèles statiques de la théorie des choix rationnels. Dans mon article, je signaleune troisième réaction, soit la reprise du projet traditionnel, mais sur des bases plus modestes. En m’inspirant d’études récentessur les marchés du travail et sur les États-providences, je montre comment la théorie de la régulation et le nouvel institutionnalismereprésentent tous deux des moments différents d’une tentative de comprendre le changement historique à une grandeéchelle, mais sans chercher comme la génération antérieure à produire des « prophéties historiques inconditionnelles ».
