Abstract
Dr Pawan Singal is a Professor of Physiology and, in 2007, became the Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, St Boniface Hospital, and the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dr Singal earned his BSc Hons (1968) and MSc in Biophysics (1970) at Punjab University, India, and received his PhD in Physiology (1974) from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. After three years in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as a post-doctoral fellow of the Medical Research Council, Dr Singal joined the Physiology Department at the University of Manitoba as a lecturer. He rose through the ranks and has been a professor since 1990. He received his DSc degree in 1994 in cardiovascular pathophysiology. He also served as Associate Dean for the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba. In addition, Dr Singal holds the Naranjan S Dhalla Chair established by the St Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation. Dr Pawan K Singal He is a founding member of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in Manitoba, which began as the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences in 1987. He is recognized as a leader in the field of cell pathophysiology, in which his pioneering studies have led the way in highlighting the potential of various antioxidants in the prevention or treatment of damage associated with free radical-induced oxidative stress. Dr Singal has made significant contributions toward our understanding of heart failure resulting from doxorubicin, chronic pressure overload and myocardial infarction. He has trained more than 100 students, fellows and visiting scientists. Dr Singal has received more than $1 million in competitive scholarships and career awards, in addition to more than $10 million in research grants over a period of 20 years from different agencies including the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Medical Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr Singal has published more than 250 articles and 25 books, has given more than 244 talks around the world and has co-chaired more than 133 symposia sessions. A community leader, Dr Singal has been recognized more than 50 times with honours and awards by local, national and international organizations/agencies including the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Heart Award for outstanding contributions as a Heart Research Builder in Manitoba. The University of Manitoba has established an award in his name called the “Pawan K Singal Award for Graduate Students in Cardiovascular Sciences”. His name has been added to the wall of fame at the University of Manitoba, recognizing his outstanding teaching skills and research. Dr Singal received the prestigious Albrecht Fleckenstein Memorial Award for his “distinguished contribution in the field of basic research in cardiology”. The Fleckenstein award is presented periodically to recognize outstanding career achievements in basic cardiovascular research. When taken together, Pawan’s achievements in research, mentoring and scholarly activity are tremendous. I am honoured to have worked with Dr Singal over the past 25 years, and pleased to have prepared this biosketch highlighting his achievements in honour of his 65th birthday.
