Abstract
Cet article montre la contribution des enseignantes laïques à la formation de la jeunesse vivant en milieu urbain au Québec dans le premier tiers du XIXe siècle. Montréal, ville mi-francophone, mi-anglophone à l’époque, a été choisie comme terrain d’enquête. Comme ailleurs en Occident, ces femmes se sont approprié avec succès la tâche d’instruire les enfants et les jeunes filles. L’enseignement devient pour plusieurs d’entre elles une carrière valorisante, un métier rentable qu’elles pratiquent auprès d’une clientèle diversifiée dans un cadre d’autonomie ou de relative autonomie. On ne peut leur attribuer une volonté de professionnalisation. Il reste que leurs efforts auront permis la scolarisation d’un nombre considérable de jeunes enfants et aux filles de poursuivre leur scolarité au-delà du primaire, et cela, avant que l’État ne prenne, en milieu urbain comme en milieu rural, l’initiative de l’instruction publique.
