Abstract
Le métier d’imprimeur s’est bien transformé depuis l’apparition de l’imprimerie à Québec en 1764. En 200 ans, il est passé d’un mode artisanal de production, où le maître imprimeur transmettait son savoir à ses apprentis suivant le principe traditionnel du compagnonnage, à un mode de production industriel marqué par une division du travail toujours plus grande et des transformations technologiques majeures. Cet article présente les principales étapes qui jalonnent l’évolution de ce métier alors que l’artisan du XIXesiècle, qui jouait aussi le rôle de journaliste, de libraire et d’éditeur, disparaît progressivement au moment de la professionnalisation des métiers de libraire et d’éditeur pour faire place au XXesiècle à l’imprimeur spécialisé et à l’imprimeur commercial.
