Abstract
Zusammenfassung Obwohl kulturelle und biologische Evolution sich in vieler Hinsicht ähneln, steht die Soziologie evolutionären Erklärungen sozialen Verhaltens noch immer weitgehend ablehnend gegenüber. Ein Grund dafür ist, daß Darwins ursprüngliche Ideen in der Folge durch ein verengtes genetisches Modell der Evolution ersetzt wurden, das kulturelle Merkmale an ihren Reproduktionserfolg band und dem einzelnen Organismus nur eine passive Rolle im Evolutionsprozeß zugestand. Es konnte daher weder die vielen nichtadaptiven Züge menschlichen Sozialverhaltens noch den intentionalen Charakter menschlicher Kultur erklären. Darwin sah dagegen Organismen als aktive Teilnehmer an der natürlichen Auslese. Ihre intern gesteuerte Erprobung und Auswahl von Verhaltensstrategien während ihrer Lebenszeit war ein ebenso wichtiger Bestandteil der Evolution wie die genetische Vererbung des Resultats an künftige Generationen. Interne Auswahl schließt sowohl Intention wie Irrtum und adaptiv überflüssige Merkmale ein. Sie liefert ein brauchbareres Modell für die evolutionäre Analyse menschlicher Kultur, insbesondere des kreativen Handelns, der Rolle von Werten und der Organisation sozialer Systeme.
