Este texto forma parte de un proyecto historiográfico orientado a determinar y comprender el papel jugado por la arqueología en relación a los estudios de historia medieval en España. En el mismo se analizan las intervenciones –desde la recuperación de epigrafía y monedas hasta la realización de excavaciones– efectuadas entre la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y el primer cuarto del siglo XX, en el marco de la institucionalización de la arqueología que se produce en ese periodo. Se intenta determinar si existió realmente una investigación en arqueología medieval que pueda considerarse coherente; y, si fue así, sus raíces ideológicas, características, periodización, etc. y las razones de que la misma aparentemente desapareciera casi completamente hasta los años ochenta del siglo XX.
