Après la Terreur, l’histoire, comme d’autres disciplines, est mobilisée pour reconstruire une société chamboulée par dix années de guerre civile. Les autorités politiques comme les groupes sociaux tentent alors d’imposer leur vision du passé à travers des procédés classiques de sélection et d’oubli, mais aussi en expérimentant de nouvelles manières d’écrire l’histoire. Charlotte Corday, alors encore célèbre pour avoir assassiné Marat le 13 juillet 1793, est un des symboles les plus représentatifs de cette discorde française qu’il convient de masquer. L’écriture et la réécriture de sa vie de manière de plus en plus stéréotypée au sein des dictionnaires biographiques, devient alors un des modes privilégiés de cette entreprise de stabilisation politique et de fixation sociale au début du XIXe siècle.
