La meilleure prise en compte des impacts des activités humaines sur l’environnement est un combat engagé depuis longtemps. Nous avons œuvré pour améliorer la connaissance de ces impacts. Des outils ont émergé pour les mesurer et les rendre compréhensibles : l’empreinte environnementale, l’empreinte carbone, le sac à dos écologique... et les analyses de cycles de vie (ACV). L’expérience a montré que les ACV publiées tendaient à présenter des résultats trop souvent favorables à leurs commanditaires. En s’améliorant, les ACV sont devenues de plus en plus complexes, lourdes et coûteuses. Les ACV risquent donc de devenir un outil au service des plus grosses entreprises leur permettant d’augmenter plus encore leur avantage par rapport aux petites entreprises. Pouvons-nous espérer disposer un jour d’un instrument neutre et efficace pour nous aider à faire des choix ? Il faudra au préalable résoudre des questions de gouvernance et de démocratie, et, ensuite, bien affûter l’outil des ACV et l’utiliser de façon pertinente. Et, surtout, il conviendra de conserver son esprit critique.
