Résumé Cet article s’intéresse aux trois parcs nationaux français des Cévennes, Pyrénées et Vanoise. Il propose d’étudier la façon dont ces parcs entretiennent et valorisent un paysage qui symbolise la perpétuation d’une identité française traditionnelle. S’efforçant en premier lieu d’associer au milieu naturel divers éléments représentatifs d’une culture nationale atemporelle, les gestionnaires des parcs agissent ensuite de façon à ce que celle-ci apparaisse comme une donnée aussi naturelle que le dit milieu. Une fois façonné dans sa matérialité, ses pratiques et ses représentations, l’espace lui-même prolonge alors les termes d’un discours visant à susciter un sentiment d’appropriation et d’appartenance au territoire national. Des années 1960 au temps présent, ce processus de patrimonialisation de la nature participe ainsi à l’édification de la nation-mémoire française, autant qu’il nous en révèle sa crise actuelle.
