Grâce au suivi de rencontres quakers dans un bourg du Derbyshire (Angleterre) entre 2000 et 2006, l’auteure décrit une activité religieuse élaborée chaque dimanche par les adeptes, dans l’immobilité et le silence quasi-total, sans liturgie ni prêtrise. Prenant le silence pour objet anthropologique, elle montre qu’il ressortit d’une quête spirituelle dont le registre sensoriel rend compte comme d’un rite en dépit du souci qu’ont les quakers d’éliminer les symboles de leurs pratiques. En élargissant l’ethnographie à l’observation du lieu, des objets convoqués et du corps engagé des participants, l’auteure met en lumière la part du sensible dans les relations sociales mais aussi dans l’enquête. En même temps, le sens des assemblées silencieuses quakers est indissociable de l’engagement moral et militant des adeptes dans la société.
