Abstract
C’est à travers quelques-unes des transformations culturelles, économiques, sociales et politiques que connaît le contexte contemporain que cet article propose une lecture macrosociologique des phénomènes de multiplication et de démocratisation des cas de burnout depuis le moment du premier cas diagnostiqué dans les années 1970. Deux exemples de transformation font ici l’objet d’une analyse : le cas de la recherche d’autonomie, nouvelle norme sociale, et le cas de l’injonction, figure récente d’une domination désormais responsabilisante. Au coeur de ces transformations, l’individu contemporain au travail confronté à l’exigence d’un surinvestissement professionnel, plus psychique que physique, que lui commandent a la fois son projet identitaire et une injonction intériorisée à la première personne vers le « toujours plus » largement inspirée des techniques de « vente de soi ».
