Abstract
AbstractThis paper draws on published laws and extensive files from central and provincial Russian archives to examine the ways in which women negotiated their own soslovie status by actively petitioning to enter new sosloviia societies, and finds that not only did women have a different relationship to soslovie than men, but also the way in which women related to soslovie demonstrates the changing role of sosloviia in Russian society. Their active participation in the system shows both the persistence of soslovie-based hierarchies in Russian society, and also the evolving nature of communal responsibility during the nineteenth century, from one based on the duties of individuals to the commune or the state, to one based more on the responsibilities of the commune to the individual.
