Nacido en Estocolmo, se graduo en medicina en 1962, y se doctoro en el Karolisnka Institutet en 1964. Bengt Saltin ha cosechado una carrera profesional en el ambito de la fisiologia del ejercicio, que tan solo puede compararse con su humanidad y cercania. Su curriculum es muy brillante: Profesor asistente en el Karolinska Institute (KI) desde 1965 hasta 1973; Profesor de Fisiologia Humana en el Instituto August Krogh , Universidad de Copenhague (UC) (1973-1990); Profesor Invitado de Fisiologia (1990-1993); Profesor de Fisiologia Humana UC (1994-1997); Director del Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre , desde 1993. Doctor Honoris Causa por una veintena de universidades como University of Paris, France, 1990, University of Athens, Greece, 1994, University of Guelph, Canada, 1997, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece, 1998, Norwegian University of Physical Education, Oslo, Norway, 1998, University of Tartu, Estonia, 1998, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, 2000 , es autor de mas de 400 articulos originales y 150 revisiones y capitulos de libros.
