Abstract
En este artículo, quiero explicitar el proceso por el cual la representación de la indianidad se construyó historicamente en el imaginario occidental, subrayando la Trayectoria de la indianidad: teología y política, interrelación de las dimensiones religiosa y política. La primera definición, teológica, estuvo polarizada entre el « natural inocente » y el « salvaje esclavo de Satanás ». La visión lascasiana, apartada durante largos períodos frente a las dificultades de la evangelización, fue rescatada recientemente por la Teología de la Liberación y uno de sus avatares, la Teología India; una versión laíca es abanderada hoy por el movimiento ecologista. La representación política del indio, en las colonias españolas de Mesoamérica y de los Andes, se arraigó en la concepción aristotélica de los hombres « nacidos para obedecer », lo que correspondía a una práctica de subordinación. Mientras que en el norte y sur del continente (exceptuando el interludio de articulación político-comercial de los franceses), a la colonización de sustitución la acompañó la imagen de un indio destinado a desaparecer de una tierra « manifestamente destinada » a los colonos europeos. Las organizaciones indígenas actuales desarrollan una auto-representación que combina elementos lascasianos-ecologistas acerca de su pasado precolonial con el concepto moderno de nación y sus corolarios, el territorio y la autonomía política.
