La vague nationalitaire qui a déferlé sur les pays du tiers-monde après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale a eu une grande influence sur les peuples occidentaux sans État. Parmi eux, la Bretagne et le Québec sont exemplaires en ce qu’ils voient naître au cours des années 1960 non seulement une appropriation du discours de la décolonisation, mais aussi d’une de ses pratiques : la libération nationale par le recours à la violence politique. Les deux Fronts de libération connaissent alors un parcours parallèle chronologiquement différent, mais qui puise à des arguments comparables. On y retrouve des similitudes dans les définitions de l’identité, de la culture, de l’histoire, l’économie, et des rapports de force politiques structurant ces sociétés décrites comme étant coloniales. Cependant, le Québec des années 1970 verra le mouvement nationalitaire abandonner la lutte de libération nationale au profit du légalisme, tandis que le mouvement breton continue à y avoir recours jusqu’aux années 1990.
