Abstract
The Report of the National Broadband Task Force (2001) raised the prospect of extending broadband capability to virtually all Canadian communities within the next few years. The prototype for Canada as a broadband-connected nation is already under way in the province of Alberta, where, within the next two years, 95% of communities will be provided with broadband connectivity. It is expected that the Alberta SuperNet will provide these communities with higher levels of both government information and social services. It is unclear, however, how the network will impact such things as higher education, economic development, and cultural identity. This paper reports on a three-year federally funded research project studying the broad social impact of the SuperNet experiment.
