Abstract
Pendant les trois dernières décennies du XXesiècle, la Chine, par ses politiques de contrôle des naissances, et le Canada, par ses politiques d’immigration, sont apparus comme de grands laboratoires sociaux de démographie du vieillissement. Quels ont été les résultats de ces expériences ? Des simulations permettent ici de comparer de façon quantitative leurs effets sur l’évolution de six indicateurs du vieillissement pendant la période 1970-2000. Ces deux politiques ont, à un degré similaire, atteint leur objectif essentiel en réduisant la population en Chine et en l’augmentant au Canada, mais leur rôle a été tout à fait différent eu égard au processus et aux conséquences démographiques du vieillissement. Pour vérifier si, à l’avenir, les politiques de population seront une solution au vieillissement, la possibilité de contrebalancer et d’atténuer celui-ci par l’augmentation des naissances en Chine et par l’immigration au Canada est ensuite examinée pour la période 2000-2050.
