La position de Jean Chapelain (1595-1674) vis--vis des Anciens est empreinte de nuances.En effet, sa correspondance permet de saisir quel point son systme de rfrence est imprgn de culture antique et la place prpondrante qu'elle occupe lorsqu'il tablit un jugement ou une critique.Toutefois, cet homme de lettres, qui a activement particip l'laboration de la doctrine classique, considre que les lumires de l'Antiquit doivent se doubler des grces des auteurs modernes.Sa correspondance prsente sa position, qui s'inscrit en continuit avec celle prconise par ses contemporains, soit l'imitation des Anciens, mais dans une relation mulatrice et non de servilit.rudit, il utilise son savoir pour jouer un rle de passeur de culture entre le milieu savant et le milieu mondain, qui souhaite accder aux connaissances des Anciens.
