Abstract
El posicionamiento de Jean Chapelain (1595-1674) frente a los clásicos grecolatinos está lleno de matices. En efecto, su correspondencia permite comprender hasta qué punto su sistema de referencias está inmerso en la cultura antigua, así como la importancia que tiene ésta al emitir juicios o críticas. Sin embargo, este hombre de letras que ha participado activamente en la elaboración de la doctrina clásica, considera que las luces de la Antigüedad deben acompañarse de las gracias de los escritores modernos. Su correspondencia presenta esta opinión, que continúa aquella otra preconizada por sus contemporáneos, es decir, la imitación de los «Anciens», pero en una relación de emulación y no de servilismo. Chapelain es un erudito que utiliza sus conocimientos para tender puentes entre la élite intelectual y los ambientes mundanos que quieren acceder al conocimiento de los clásicos.
