Abstract
Le voyage d’André Laurendeau (1935-1937) en France constitue un moment décisif dans l’itinéraire intellectuel et politique du voyageur et du Canada français. Laurendeau est à Paris au moment où paraît son tract, Notre nationalisme , qui est la formulation de la « doctrine » des Jeune-Canada (décembre 1932- ). Les deux événements relèvent d’un contre-temps rare en histoire: c’est, en effet, au moment où il trouve sa voie « laurentienne » que Laurendeau se met à douter de façon irréversible du nationalisme. Cette désarticulation intellectuelle éclaire la décennie 1930 ; car au-delà du fait que Maurice Duplessis récupérera, à sa première élection en 1936, le nationalisme intempestif et indépendantiste de La Nation et des Jeunesses Patriotes, on se demande ce qu’aurait été cette « aube » de 1932 (le mot est de Groulx) si Laurendeau avait persisté dans sa vision Jeune-Canada du nationalisme laurentien, lui qui était l’inspiration du mouvement. Ce voyage demeure initiatique sur un autre plan : alors qu’au même moment, le poète de Saint-Denys Garneau rate, intellectuellement et émotivement son voyage, Laurendeau fait du sien le degré zéro d’un ajustement progressif du Canada français à la France contemporaine . La Crise des années 1930 traverse toutes ces initiatives.
