Abstract
Selon la ligne de l'hospitalite, un extraordinaire cosmopolitisme se diffuse. «La republique (res publica qui comprend aussi le regime imperial) romaine n'a plus rien de romain», ecrit F. Lot dans son ouvrage sur la fin du monde antique. Rien n'etait ineluctable encore dans sa dispersion en autant d'Etats nationaux qu'il comptait de peuples. Le «mythe national», pour reprendre ici une expression de Suzanne Citron, n'avait pas eu encore le temps de prendre consistance. Et ce n'est que par une retrospection teleologiquement orientee que l'on peut en voir la prefiguration dans tous ces royaumes qui s'installent dans l'Empire meme, comme le royaume franc de Clovis. L'Etat national ne s'est impose que par une suite de coups de force, non par l'accomplissement d'un destin. D'autres solutions ont ete, a tout moment, possibles: dans la ligne de la federation, dans celle de l'hospitalite.
