Abstract
Au 19e siècle, l’intérêt manifesté par les médecins français et vénitiens pour le climat de Venise voit son aboutissement avec l’apparition d’un tourisme balnéaire dans le centre historique de la cité. Les propriétés exceptionnelles des eaux lagunaires révélées par les publications des médecins attirent, jusqu’à la fin du siècle, des milliers de malades européens désireux de goûter aux effets bénéfiques de la « cure vénitienne » dans les lagunes. Autrefois dénoncée pour son caractère malsain, l’eau de Venise est désormais appréciée pour ses vertus curatives. Avec l’avènement du tourisme moderne au milieu du siècle, le bain comme mondanité supplante progressivement le bain thérapeutique dans les établissements flottants implantés le long du Grand Canal, tout comme dans les principaux hôtels de la ville.
