Abstract
Very little attention has been paid to Chinese settlements outside of large urban centres in Canada. In this essay, the author introduces the history of Chinese immigration to Western Manitoba since 1884. In telling the story of two of the earliest laundrymen in the region, the author explains the roles of the Zhongguo Guomindang (KMT) and Protestant Christian churches in helping Chinese immigrants assimilate and achieve social status in Canada.
