Le genre cinématographique du road movie est présenté ici comme issu d’une constellation de modernité « solide » qui combine locomotion et médiamotion dans une mobilité culturelle spécifique. L’analyse générique identifie une matrice où se détachent, comme noyau central, la déprise par rapport aux forces sédentarisantes de la modernité et la production de contingence. On montre comment le genre, sur la base de cette matrice, fait preuve d’une grande productivité culturelle et d’une remarquable efficience historique, dans la mesure où il transforme sans cesse sa propre articulation interne tout en se laissant transférer de son américanité originaire vers d’autres aires culturelles.
