Abstract
L'auteur décrit l'évolution de la fécondité en Hongrie depuis le début du siècle, en faisant ressortir les particularités nationales qui ont influencé les fluctuations des indicateurs. Il met en lumière les effets a court et à long terme de certaines mesures gouvernementales destinées à modifier les comportements liés à la fécondité. Mettant les principales tendances de la fécondité en rapport avec les changements sociaux, il relève notamment les conséquences démographiques des chocs économiques dus au changement de régime politique. À l'aide de résultats d'enquêtes, il examine ensuite l'évolution des pratiques en matière de limitation des naissances et analyse la relation entre contraception et fécondité chez les jeunes, puis présente les opinions, les valeurs et les préférences des Hongrois a l'égard des enfants, du mariage et de la famille. Il traite enfin de l'efficacité des politiques familiales en Europe, dans un contexte d'économie de marché.
