Abstract
Étudier le rôle de l’origine dans la détermination d’inégalités sociales de santé requiert de la catégoriser. Ces catégories, en France, sont celles de nationalité et de pays de naissance, donnant à comparer la santé des Français à celle des étrangers et celle des immigrés à celle des non immigrés. Les écarts ainsi objectivés sont interprétés en faisant la part des déterminants socio-économiques et des facteurs propres à l’origine étrangère. Mais cette catégorisation de l’origine laisse dans l’ombre le rôle, sur la santé, des dimensions ethniques et raciales de l’origine. La situation est bien différente aux États-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne, où la recherche mobilise des catégories ethniques et raciales. Lorsqu’elle parvient à éviter de réifier ces catégories dans des approches naturalisantes ou culturalisantes, elle ouvre des pistes de compréhension de l’intrication étroite des facteurs socio-économiques et ethno-raciaux dans la détermination de la santé. C’est finalement la transcription dans les corps de l’entremêlement de divers rapports sociaux inégalitaires qui est révélée.
