Abstract
Loin de se réduire à une entreprise strictement culturelle, le cosmopolitisme encyclopédique promu par Aubin-Louis Millin de Grandmaison est chargé d’enjeux politiques : en l’an III, Le Magasin encyclopédique a joué un rôle majeur décisif dans la redéfinition culturelle de la diplomatie thermidorienne et dans la promotion d’une Europe pacifiée ; sous le Directoire, ce périodique s’est également imposé comme un des lieux de déconstruction des « systèmes diplomatiques » de la Grande Nation. A travers la revalorisation des nations jusqu’alors stigmatisées comme « mineures » ou « barbares », ses rédacteurs ont cherché à défendre un modèle d’équilibre européen qui remet en cause les prétentions hégémoniques de la Grande Nation. Dans cette conception, l’Europe ne saurait se réduire à un ordre géopolitique fixé par des traités diplomatiques : elle est pensée comme un espace d’échanges (économiques et culturels) qui doivent permettre de rapprocher entre elles les nations.
