Poursuivant l’examen des thèses de Rosenzweig sur la traduction déjà amorcé dans une précédente étude, cet article en mesure les enjeux et la portée, à l’aune notamment de la dimension eschatologique qui s’y projette et forme en quelque sorte la condition implicite de son exercice. S’y révèle entre autres le fait que le paradigme d’une langue Une – Es gibt nur Eine Sprache – courant en filigrane de la pluralité des idiomes, loin de se laisser cantonner dans la quête fantasmatique d’une prétendue langue adamique ou de quelque autre parangon de ce genre, se « traduit » plutôt dans une eschatologie discrète dont le dessein s’affine et se ramifie en chacune des langues, orientant secrètement leurs affinités électives en direction d’un partage que Rosenzweig associe à l’avènement de la paix messianique. Ce scénario doit cependant être conçu dans l’horizon de la finitude qui appartient originairement à la détermination d’essence de l’être humain, bref au fondement ontologique de son existence, laquelle en retour se révèle tributaire de la dimension historiale qui enchâsse le champ entier de son expérience. La figure complexe que dessine ce champ de déterminations sollicite donc de la part du traducteur, même commande chez lui, une responsabilité toujours plus accrue à l’égard de l’autre homme, de l’étranger. Il s’agit en quelque sorte d’activer, en l’occurrence dans le frayage avalisé par l’exercice de la traduction, ce que Walter Benjamin désignait pour sa part comme une « faible force messianique ».
