Abstract
Traditionnellement, les historiens ont étudié les relations humaines en s’en tenant exclusivement au niveau social et en négligeant les liens que les peuples entretiennent avec le monde naturel. Pourtant, l’examen de l’histoire géologique et écologique de l’Amérique du Nord montre clairement l’importance de tels liens. La nature, dont l’action s’étend sur une période qui nous reste le plus souvent incommensurable, établit les conditions de la vie humaine qui influencent, façonnent et limitent, par exemple, la colonisation des terres, l’économie ou le bien-être commun. Or cette influence reste trop souvent invisible aux historiens. En adoptant une approche contre-factuelle, cet article cherche à remédier à cette invisibilité et à expliquer de manière plus profonde et plus riche le passé de l’humanité.
