Usages, odeurs et saveurs disparaissent, sinon de la description des plantes, du moins de leur diagnose. Celle-ci ne repose plus que sur un petit nombre de caractères choisis à l’avance, parmi lesquels la disposition et le nombre des organes de la fleur. La botanique devient systématique, pour ne pas dire géométrique. Les qualités sensorielles sont autant que possible exclues de la détermination des espèces. Sigaut nous propose à partir d’une intuition d’Haudricourt de reprendre l’histoire de cette disparition.
