In nonhuman primates, hormones related to female sexuality are mainly associated with the ovarian cycle and include estrogens and progesterones. In male primates, the main hormone related to sexuality is testosterone. In male primates, testosterone affects male sexual behavior but its direct effect on mating behavior can be confounded by its relationship with dominance rank. In female primates, estrogens and progesterones are produced during the ovarian cycle and fluctuate in a predictable way. Female and male sexual behavior has been linked to the cyclical pattern of ovarian hormones and can be described using the terms: attractivity, proceptivity, and receptivity. The two steroid hormones seem to have a negative relationship with each other with respect to sexuality: high levels of estrogen tend to increase male attractiveness toward the female, and high levels of progesterone tend to reduce female attractiveness for males.
