Abstract
Harlow, Essex is situated about forty kilometres northeast of London. The town is part of the city’s commuter belt—the busy M11 motorway run-ning nearby and London Liverpool St. station, a forty-minute, high-speed train ride away. Fields of wheat and barley, and great, black weather-boarded barns also characterize the Harlow landscape, as the scenic Essex countryside surrounds the town. Part medieval agricultural village, part postwar modernist “new town, ” Harlow is a combination of both old and modern, rural and urban spaces merged together in 1947 to form a new community and a new place-identity. This paper is concerned with how a town that is both very old and very new is embodied in its local history museum, and how concepts of place, local identity and belonging are shaped through the museum’s historical representa-tions of the town.
