Abstract
Chez les Amérindiens, les sacs étaient faits pour conserver des objets personnels destinés à des usages quotidiens ou rituels, et ce dans toute l’Amérique du Nord orientale. D’anciennes mentions du xviie siècle parlent de récipients tissés en fibres végétales et de sacs faits d’une peau entière de mammifère. Les plus anciens sacs préservés et documentés, faits de cuir façonné, que l’on trouve dans des collections euro-américaines privées ou publiques, datent de la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle. Malheureusement, ces exemplaires n’ont pas été très bien étudiés. Au mieux, les sacs ont été décrits dans des catalogues et attribués sans documentation satisfaisante – si ce n’est de brèves mentions concernant des périodes plus récentes. On comprend encore mal l’historique du processus de collecte, les types de fabrication et les fonctions matérielles et, ce qui est le plus important, l’identification des variantes régionales et tribales, les styles artistiques des artisanes, ainsi que les changements observés dans le temps. La présente recherche répond à certaines de ces questions, notamment à propos d’un ensemble de sacs de cuir façonné, très proches quant à leur style, qui datent d’avant 1850 et sont attribués aux Hurons-Wendats.
