Comme c’est le cas chez plusieurs de ses contemporains, Victor-Lévy Beaulieu met en question le rapport québécois à l’histoire, en particulier par l’entremise du rêve d’une oeuvre qui permettrait enfin de faire accéder le Québec à celle-ci. Ce « Livre », La grande tribu que Beaulieu promet depuis plus de trente ans sans jamais l’achever, s’avérerait la figure par excellence de ce temps en arrêt propre à l’historicité québécoise. L’auteur analyse ici les traces du Livre dans certains des romans les plus déterminants de Victor-Lévy Beaulieu et les conséquences qui découlent d’une telle écriture. Aux figures de l’historicisme qui conduisent à des contradictions, sera opposée la logique du messianisme comme principe de lisibilité. Ce messianisme, juif, est à distinguer du « messianisme canadien-français » sur lequel ironise Beaulieu dans Don Quichotte de la démanche (1974) et Satan Belhumeur (1981).
