Abstract
Il est ici question du durian, un fruit particulièrement prisé en Asie du Sud-Est mais dont l’odeur fait l’objet de descriptions pour le moins univoques de la part des Occidentaux (odeur de cadavre, odeur de putréfaction, etc.). Comme l’observe l’anthropologue Jacques Dournes, c’est un fait bien établi que le durian « partage l’humanité en deux ». Plutôt que d’expliquer cette différence, comme il est d’usage, par l’existence d’un « long apprentissage culturel », je m’attache à replacer dans cet article le-durian-qui-partage-l’humanité-en-deux dans le jeu beaucoup plus complexe de rapports tout à la fois culturels, sociaux, cognitifs et historiques qui le font advenir.
