Abstract
This paper is a reflection of how we learn the art and philosophy of storytelling. Based on the author's experience as a listener, learner, and storytelling pioneer, the essay suggests three questions storytellers may usefully contend with: (1) how to let a story “through,” so that the performance does not impede or diminish the meanings of the story itself; (2) how to create narrative suspense; and (3) how to hunt and gather a storytelling repertoire. The author encountered these questions through discussions of his relationships with his own mentors, notably Alice Kane, Joan Bodger, and Yukon elder Angela Sidney. He calls the long-term relationships apprentice storytellers form with masters a kind of “dragon-based pedagogy” and argues in the essay that this slow, collaborative, and experimental way of learning has a unique and irreplaceable value in the education of a storyteller.
