Quelle place pour le public dans la musique sérielle, à laquelle on associe toujours le paradigme de l’écoute totale? La comparaison entre deux sociétés de concerts intimement liées à l’invention de cette musique (le Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen de Schoenberg et le Domaine musical de Boulez) permet de dissocier le mythe d’un sérialisme indifférent à toute réception, et la réalité des organisations musicales forgées par ses principaux artisans. Chez Schoenberg, le refus des médiations musicales et de la publicité des concerts permet aux auditeurs d’accéder à des répétitions privées des mêmes oeuvres, bien avant que le disque n’en popularise la pratique. Ces répétitions sont outillées par des écrits, par des dispositifs d’écoute. Chez Boulez, l’existence du disque est intégrée dans le dispositif d’écoute : la programmation juxtapose des oeuvres issues de périodes différentes, et d’effectifs variables; la politique de diffusion engendre une importante discographie qui fixe à la fois un style d’interprétation et un répertoire. Chacun des deux dispositifs fait travailler trois niveaux distincts de répétition : répétition interne à l’oeuvre, répétition de l’oeuvre, répétition d’une exécution. Mais l’articulation entre ces niveaux diffère chez Schoenberg et Boulez car les deux institutions s’insèrent, malgré leur relative proximité chronologique, dans deux époques éloignées de la reproductibilité musicale (l’une encore dominée par la partition et le piano, l’autre déjà par l’enregistrement sonore).
