Abstract
Cet article analyse la démarche critique de Gérald Fortin (1929-1997) dans la saisie de ce qu’on pouvait considérer jusqu’aux années 1960 comme étant urbain ou rural. En 1971, dans La fin d’un règne, Fortin déclare avoir été le témoin de la disparition du rural, et écrit que le Québec est une ville à inventer. Ce recueil de publications donne à voir un parcours inscrit dans le dernier segment d’une trentaine d’années de discussions sur le devenir du Québec qui ont bouleversé nos références aux notions de l’urbain et du rural. La signification de ces concepts évolue, chez Fortin, dans la poursuite et le discernement d’un idéal du développement en conflit avec d’autres. Sur le fond de références par rapport auxquelles ses textes se démarquent, l’élaboration de sa visée du devenir du monde rural et des villes du Québec est schématisée en trois phases d’une sociologie toujours actuelle.
