Abstract
Selon les théoriciens de la modernité avancée, les transformations sociales et économiques récentes font en sorte que les individus sont confrontés à plus de risques et d'incertitudes tout en disposant d'un éventail de choix plus large pour mener à bien leur existence. La mise à l'épreuve de ces perspectives théoriques par l'étude du processus d'insertion résidentielle des jeunes au Québec, en France, en Espagne et en Allemagne permet de nuancer certains apports de ces théories. Dans chacune de ces sociétés, l'articulation différente de l'insertion résidentielle montre l'importance des rapports familiaux et de l'aide étatique sous-jacents à l'atteinte de l'autonomie. Cela touche la construction autonome de l'identité et des trajectoires, la mobilité et l'accès à la formation, conditions essentielles à l'exercice des choix individuels des jeunes dans le contexte actuel. L'analyse invite donc à la prudence dans l'intégration des théories de la modernité avancée aux études sur le passage à la vie adulte.
