Abstract
Le travail indépendant est l’une des formes de travail atypiques qui a connu la plus forte croissance depuis le milieu des années 1970. Surreprésentés parmi les pauvres laborieux, les travailleurs indépendants, surtout ceux qui travaillent seuls, sans employés, présentent davantage de parenté avec le travailleur précaire qu’avec l’entrepreneur prospère. Cet article s’intéresse à l’une des dimensions constitutives de leur précarité, soit celle du déficit de protection par rapport au risque. Le plus souvent exclus des systèmes mutualisés de protection sociale, disposant d’un accès limité et inégal à des ressources familiales, marchandes ou professionnelles, les travailleurs indépendants n’ont souvent que leur capacité de travail pour affronter le risque. Le précariat prend ici la figure d’une insécurité permanente, en dépit d’une présence, ou tout au moins d’une disponibilité, permanente au travail.
