Abstract
Cet article montre que le fuyant interlocuteur dans Satyre I de John Donne, désigné par l’expression «fondling motley humorist», évoque sans doute délibérément les pénis doués de parole que l'on trouve dans les œuvres poétiques et philosophiques de Horace, Augustin et Montaigne. Cette hypothèse place le poème de Donne, d'un point de vue général, dans une longue tradition de réflexion au sujet de la possibilité de réguler, par la loi, les humains et en particulier, le désir masculin. Ce qui place aussi ce poème, d'un point de vue plus spécifique, dans le contexte d'une littérature professionnelle émergente, propre aux débuts de la loi moderne, dans laquelle l'émotion et l'imagination étaient sur le point d'être réprimées par une conception plus restrictive, rationnelle et unitaire de la loi.
