Abstract
This paper introduces the avalanche control program at Sunshine Village Ski Resort and touches on a section of the Banff National Park Road Control program as well. It goes on to introduce the background of the snowpack and weather in the region, with the key weather events leading up to March 6, 2012. This day saw a near-miss event with a technician caught in an avalanche; an unusual, large (size D3) in-bounds avalanche triggered sympathetically from a size D3 nearby, after the first slope was bombed extensively, opened previously, and heli-bombed (with no result) minutes before being triggered. The final dramatic event is the size D4 avalanche that Parks Canada triggered, burying the (closed) access road to the ski hill and running well beyond the mapped runout zone. This is a serious reminder of uncertainty in avalanche forecasting especially in the Rockies both at a ski resort and with a road control program; how zoning can be proven wrong by an anomalous avalanche event; and why good travel habits and following all safety protocols are critical, no matter what the setting.
