Abstract
Les Perroniana, ce recueil posthume de bons mots de Jacques Davy Du Perron, permettent de jeter un nouvel éclairage sur la formation oratoire que reçut Henri III à l’Académie du Palais en 1579. Ils montrent, entre autres, à quel point Du Perron était réfractaire aux traits et aux pointes si chers au roi. Estimant qu’il n’y a « rien de si contraire à l’éloquence », Du Perron n’honora sans doute jamais la commande de « mille traits » que lui fit le monarque. Tout indique au contraire qu’il traduisit le premier discours contre Verrès et la première lettre à Quintus comme un antidote au penchant de Henri III pour le trait et comme une matière à imitation destinée à lui faire goûter Cicéron et l’« infinité de belles choses » qu’il recèle.
