Abstract
The literature calls for a greater focus on developing counselling and therapeutic approaches in working with men from cross-cultural perspectives. This article provides a theoretical and clinical values-based Integrity model perspective in working with men around issues of culture and identity. Framed around the case example of Akio, a Shinto priest presenting at the Emergency Room with overwhelming anxiety about homicidal impulses, this article offers clinical support for the results of Integrity-based clinical and empirical research based on nearly five decades of work indicating that men have been receptive to this positive, strengths-based and gender-sensitive therapeutic approach, challenging the myth of the emotionally defective male.
