Abstract
O Camões, I. P. é um Instituto Público sob a tutela do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, dotado de autonomia administrativa, financeira e patrimonial, com a missão de propor e executar as políticas de Cooperação Portuguesa, de ensino e divulgação da Língua Portuguesa no estrangeiro e de divulgação da Cultura Portuguesa no mundo, através da ação cultural internacional e da gestão de uma rede externa de Centros Culturais.Integradas nos Centros Culturais e no Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR), foram criadas 17 bibliotecas de apoio ao ensino, à literacia e às atividades locais para divulgação da Língua e da Cultura portuguesas, em 6 países africanos (sobretudo PALOP); 3 países europeus; 4 países asiáticos e 1 país sul americano, sendo que a frequência diária de utilizadores em locais como Luanda (350) ou Maputo (187) são representativos da importância destas estruturas para o desenvolvimento local, em termos de educação e literacia sobretudo no domínio da língua portuguesa. Com um acervo bibliográfico global estimado em 200.684 títulos e 15.640 utilizadores mensais, as bibliotecas desta rede externa disseminada pelo mundo, estão presentemente a ser reorganizadas numa estrutura integrada com vista à constituição de um catálogo bibliográfico comum, um único regulamento e a formação profissional dos seus técnicos de biblioteca.
